The Arab Spring
On the northern side of the Maritime Silk Road that connects to the Mediterranean, Caspian oil and gas from Azerbaijan flows from Turkey, then Israel from where it goes through a pipeline to the Red Sea, connecting to the Maritime Silk Road. Chevron operates and partially owns the East Mediterranean gas pipeline, which runs from Israel to Egypt, passing West of Gaza shore. This violates international law because any economic gain in the area without Palestinian agreement is illegal.
A rival route for this was going to come from Iran up to Syria, connecting to the Mediterranean, then through the Egyptian Suez Canal into the Red Sea, connecting to the Maritime Silk Road.
Unfortunately the Arab Spring happened, with American trained Abdel Fattah el-Sisi overthrowing Mohamed Morsi (el-Sisi underwent basic training at Fort Benning in 1981 and advanced training at the US Army War College in 2006) At the same time, there was an attempted coup in Syria, as well as a US-Israeli-backed proxy war against Syria which went on to directly involve Turkey and Israel.
