The Arab Spring
On the northern side of the Maritime Silk Road that connects to the Mediterranean, Caspian oil and gas from Azerbaijan flows through the BTC from Turkey and then to Israel which slides through a pipeline to the Red Sea to connect to the Maritime Silk Road. A rival route for this was going to come from Iran up to Syria which would connect to the Mediterranean and then through the Suez Canal into the Red Sea, connecting to the Maritime Silk Road.
Unfortunately the Arab Spring happened, with American trained Abdel Fattah el-Sisitaking over; there was an attempted coup in Syria, as well as a foreign-backed mercenary proxy war Syria which went on to involve Turkey and Israel.
